How it works

CPF LIFE pays a lifelong monthly income from your payout-eligibility age (currently 65). The payout depends on how much you set aside in your Retirement Account. The 2026 retirement sums apply to members turning 55 in 2026.

At 55, CPF opens a Retirement Account (RA) for you, and savings are transferred into it up to your chosen retirement sum. This RA balance later becomes the premium for your CPF LIFE annuity. Since 19 January 2025 the Special Account has been closed for members aged 55 and above, so for this group balances sit in the Ordinary Account, MediSave and the RA.

Each cohort turning 55 has three reference sums. For the 2026 cohort these are the Basic Retirement Sum (BRS, $110,200), the Full Retirement Sum (FRS, $220,400 — set at 2× the BRS) and the Enhanced Retirement Sum (ERS, $440,800 — 4× the BRS since 2025). Setting aside more produces a higher lifelong payout; amounts above your retirement sum can be withdrawn from 55. Setting aside only the BRS is generally tied to owning a property.

Payouts start from the payout-eligibility age of 65, and you can defer the start to as late as 70 — each year of deferral raises the monthly amount. The Standard Plan pays a level monthly amount, while the Escalating Plan starts lower and increases by 2% a year.

While you are still working, contributions keep flowing in. In 2026 the Ordinary Wage ceiling is $8,000 a month and the annual salary ceiling is $102,000. Combined employee-plus-employer rates step down with age — 37% of wages up to 55, 34% to 60, 25% to 65, 16.5% to 70 and 12.5% beyond — which is why the calculator asks for your age and monthly wage.

Worked example

A member who sets aside the FRS of $220,400 at 55 in 2026 could receive about $1,780/month from age 65 on the Standard Plan. Deferring the payout start age beyond 65 increases the monthly amount, up to age 70. Step by step:

  1. Set aside the sum. At 55 in 2026, $220,400 (the FRS for this cohort) is transferred into the Retirement Account.
  2. Earn interest from 55 to 65. The RA earns the 4% floor rate, plus extra interest for members 55 and above: +2% on the first $30,000 and +1% on the next $30,000. On those first two tranches alone that is up to $600 + $300 = $900 of extra interest a year, on top of the base rate.
  3. Payouts begin at 65. CPF Board's illustrative figure for this cohort on the Standard Plan is about $1,780 a month, payable for life.
  4. Optional deferral. Choosing a later start — any age up to 70 — leaves the premium earning interest for longer, so the monthly amount is higher once payouts begin.

The same mechanics scale with the sum set aside: roughly $950/month for the BRS and about $3,180–3,440/month for the ERS, on the same illustrative basis.
